What is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight is the result of converting the dimensions (length, width, and height) of a package into volumetric kilograms. The formula for calculating volumetric weight varies depending on the courier and the type of service chosen. Some couriers, for example, employ different volumetric formulas for their express and economy services.

Even though this box weighs only 2kg physically, its volumetric weight will exceed 20kg due to its larger size. Make sure you measure acuratly and declare the correct weight or else surcharges may apply.

Why is volumetric weight charged?

The larger an item, the more space it occupies on a vehicle or aircraft, leading to higher shipping costs. In the case of a large yet lightweight item, the pricing is determined based on its size rather than its weight.

How it is calculated for couriers

Various courier companies utilize different metrics, but the prevalent approach involves multiplying the three parcel dimensions in centimeters and then dividing the result by 5,000. Don't stress—the convenient tool above does this calculation for you. However, if you're inclined to figure it out on your own, here's the process:

Length x Width x Height / 5000

Step1
Multiply the 3 dimensions

Multiply the length x height x width of your parcel in cm.

For example, 20 x 20 x 30

Step2
Divide the answer by 5,000*

ou've now calculated the volumetric weight in kg.

*To calculate volumetric weight using inches, simply divide by 305

Step3
Compare to the physical weight

If the number is greater than the physical weight, then your shipment will be billed based on the volumetric weight.

120cm x 55cm x 50cm

5,000
= 66kg (vol.weight)

How it is calculated for freight

Many road freight, air freight services, and airlines typically employ a divisor of 6,000. To determine the volumetric weight of a freight shipment, multiply the dimensions (length x width x height) in centimeters and then divide the result by 6,000.

Calculate total chargeable weight

Various courier services employ distinct methods to calculate the total chargeable weight of a shipment. This variability can significantly impact the chargeable weight and, consequently, the price of certain shipments.

Example

1 Shipment containing 2 parcels
Parcel 1:

Physical Weight 10kg

Physical Weight 12kg

Parcel 2:

Physical Weight 12kg

Physical Weight 10kg

How to save on shipping bulky items?

You can save on shipping bulky items with some of our postal services as they do not charge volumetric weight. For example, DPD charge a flat rate per parcel, so you do not incur any volumetric fees. Alternatively, use one of our specialist large parcel services from DHL, Parcelforce and FedEx.

Use the right size box

If your shipment contains one or more irregular shaped parcels, the volumetric weight of each parcel will be calculated based on the smallest rectangular shape that the parcels can be accommodated into, so make sure you use the right box.

Sending pallets

If you're sending a pallet, remember the size of the pallet will be accounted for when calculating the volumetric weight of your shipment, so consider using a Euro pallet (1200 x 800mm) rather than a standard UK pallet (1200x1000mm) if your items are small enough.
